Direct Payments are cash payments from your local authority that allow you to arrange and manage your own care and support instead of having services arranged for you. They're designed to give you more choice, flexibility, and control over how your needs are met.
You can request Direct Payments if:
📌 A trusted person (like a family member) can also manage the payments on your behalf if you lack capacity.
✅ Hiring a personal assistant (PA)
✅ Paying for a care agency of your choice
✅ Help with household tasks
✅ Attending day services or activities
✅ Respite care for carers
✅ Transport or equipment, if part of your support plan
❌ What you can't use them for:
1. Assessment – You request a Care Act assessment from your local authority
📌 Some councils offer help with payroll, insurance, and recruitment.
They must offer Direct Payments unless:
If refused, they must give a written explanation.
